Director, YWBCRI–DHR Health

Carlos García-Cantu, MD, FACS

Dr. Carlos Garcia-Cantu is a board-certified general surgeon with more than three decades of clinical experience and a dedicated focus on breast surgical oncology. He performs the full spectrum of oncologic surgical procedures for breast cancer care, with a distinctive emphasis on breast reconstruction — restoring not only health but also form, confidence, and quality of life for every patient. His practice is built on the conviction that complete breast cancer care extends beyond removing disease; it includes thoughtful, individualized reconstructive planning from the very first consultation. Dr. Garcia-Cantu serves as Chair of the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) Breast Center of Excellence at DHR Health, an accreditation that reflects sustained adherence to the highest national standards for breast cancer diagnosis, treatment, and patient outcomes. Under his leadership, the center delivers fully coordinated, multidisciplinary care, bringing together surgical oncology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, radiology, and pathology to develop a personalized treatment plan for every patient.

Dr. Garcia-Cantu earned his medical degree from the Universidad de Monterrey in Mexico and completed his surgical training at New York Medical College-affiliated hospitals in New York City. He is dual board-certified in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care by the American Board of Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), and an active member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons, with certification in image-guided interventions and biopsies. He has contributed to peer-reviewed research on breast-conserving surgery and localization techniques for non-palpable breast cancers, with work published in journals including Annals of Surgery and The American Surgeon. Practicing at DHR Health in Edinburg–McAllen, Texas, Dr. Garcia-Cantu is a strong advocate for expanding access to high-quality, equitable breast cancer care across the Rio Grande Valley. He also serves as President of the Renaissance Medical Foundation’s Board, championing initiatives that strengthen surgical care throughout South Texas.
