K. S. Gopinath, MBBS, MS, FRCS (Edinburgh), FAMS
Dr. K. S. Gopinath is one of India’s leading surgical oncologists and a pioneer in cancer care, medical education, and institutional research. He is widely recognized for his major contributions to surgical oncology in India, particularly in the management of breast, head and neck, and gastrointestinal cancers. He currently serves as a professor at the R. L. Jalappa Institute of Oncology, Kolar, and as President and Director of HCG Hospital and the Bangalore Institute of Oncology, Bengaluru, India.
Dr. Gopinath completed his MBBS at JJM Medical College, Davangere, graduating with distinction. He later pursued advanced surgical training in General Surgery (MS) at Seth G.S. Medical College and KEM Hospital, Mumbai, and obtained his Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) and Fellowships in Surgical Oncology. He also earned Fellowships from the National Academy of Medical Sciences (FAMS), New Delhi. Soon after, Dr. Gopinath joined the Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology as a surgical oncologist, where he played a key role in advancing multidisciplinary cancer care. In 1989, he became a founding force behind the Bangalore Institute of Oncology, which evolved into one of India’s leading cancer centers, known for excellence in cancer treatment, clinical care, and research.
Over several decades, Dr. Gopinath has specialized in the surgical treatment of breast, head and neck, cervical, and gastrointestinal cancers. His work has emphasized evidence-based oncology, organ-preserving surgical approaches, precision surgery, patient-centered multidisciplinary care, and clinical research. He has also made significant contributions to gynecologic oncology surgery, cancer prevention, palliative care, and integrative oncology.
Dr. Gopinath has held leadership roles in national and international medical organizations. He served as President of the Association of Surgeons of India and the Indian Association of Surgical Oncology, and has been active in the Asian Oncology Society and the International College of Surgeons. He also served as Editor-in-Chief of the Indian Journal of Surgical Oncology.
A prolific academic and educator, Dr. Gopinath has authored and co-authored numerous scientific publications, editorials, clinical reviews, and oncology textbooks. His work has influenced cancer surgery practice, cancer education, and cancer registry development in India.
In recognition of his contributions to medicine and oncology, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri in 2010, one of the nation’s highest civilian honors. He has also received numerous prestigious national and international awards, including the Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the Rajyotsava Award, an Honorary FRCS, numerous national orations, and lifetime achievement honors for excellence in cancer care, surgical oncology, and academic leadership. Today, Dr. K. S. Gopinath remains an influential leader in Indian oncology through his ongoing contributions to cancer surgery, mentorship of young oncologists, institutional development, and cancer awareness initiatives.
