Michael Gnant, MD, FACS, FEBS

Dr. Michael Gnant is a Full Professor of Surgery at the Medical University of Vienna, Austria, and also serves as President of the Austrian Breast & Colorectal Cancer Study Group. Since 2015, he has co-chaired and hosted the renowned St Gallen International Consensus Panel for Early Breast Cancer in Vienna.

Dr. Gnant earned his medical degree in Vienna (1988) and subsequently specialized in surgery (1994) and in surgical oncology. He also served as a Visiting Scientist at the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, USA, from 1997 to 1999. Dr. Gnant’s research interests span several areas of surgical oncology, particularly breast and pancreatic cancers, immunotherapy, bone-targeted treatment for tumor micrometastases, tumor dormancy/quiescence and late relapse, and pathway-directed therapies, including mTOR and CDK4/6 inhibition and SERDs. He has served as Principal Investigator on many clinical trials in these fields (N>30).

Dr. Gnant, the author of more than 600 original peer-reviewed papers, has an impact factor of 4,800 and an h-index of 90. He has delivered more than 1,000 lectures at national and international meetings. He has received multiple awards, including the prestigious Claudia von Schilling Prize from the Medical University of Hannover, the Umberto Veronesi Lecture Award of Breast Surgery International, and membership in the Austrian Academy of Sciences as a Corresponding Member. He holds an honorary MD degree from Sichuan University, Chengdu, China, and Honorary/Visiting Professorships at Tianjin Medical University, Jiaotong University Xi’an, and Nanjing Medical University in China. In recent years, he has repeatedly been among the most highly cited scientists worldwide.

Dr. Gnant is involved with numerous scientific societies, including ASCO, AACR, ACS, Breast International Group (BIG), EORTC, ESSO, EUSOMA, and UICC. He served on BIG’s executive board, serves as an independent reviewer and IDMC member for the EORTC, UICC, and other international bodies, and serves as a scientific reviewer and process evaluator for the European Union. Dr. Gnant is also Editor-in-Chief of BREAST CARE and serves on the editorial boards and as a reviewer for many top-tier peer-reviewed journals, including The Lancet, The New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Clinical Oncology, and Annals of Oncology.
